Testing Video With Malone & Co's New 5D's

Our new Canon 5D's went from the box to the field in record time. Andrew and Mike were armed with the new gear. Look for more video from the 5D as we continue to put it through it's paces.

Thanks for sharing guys. Are you noticing any particular issues with camera shake while hand holding? That seems to be the primary thing anyone has harped about regarding the MkII as video cam. I wouldn't expect it to be much more different than any other hand-held camcorder in that regard, but some people seem to think you MUST have a tripod, and a solid video one to boot. Your thoughts?

(Sorry to double post here and on Vimeo, but alas...)

Good old camera shake. Yes, if you hand hold you are going to get camera shake- unless you have incredible balance and don't consume any caffeine. Tripod or some other balance device would be recommended. If you are doing fast cuts you can get away with doing some hand held. A video tripod mount would be helpful for smooth pans- a regular still camera tripod mount wasn't designed to operate with the kind of movements that would be beneficial for motion.

Mike found a great thread on Vincent Laforet's site which reads: "... it [Canon 5d Mark II] works pretty darn well for what it is- a first gen camera. This is not the “perfect camera” for everyone - and not meant to be. BUT it does do what it does - quite well (but not perfectly as you mention.)"

We think the camera is a great start for this melding of worlds, but as with all technology there is room for improvement.

Canon has video technology and one has to wonder if they are taking baby steps to integrate the mediums? If they have held back- there may be more money to be made with dripping features?? I would love to hear the back room talks from Canon and Nikon. I think the future is exciting- can't wait to see where we are in a couple years.

Final note- the 5d Mark II is an amazing still camera with ridiculous ISO range, with improved noise handling, and a large full frame capture- great addition to the arsenal.

Another question: Having any issues as far as integrating the 5dmII's video into your video workflows? FCP playing nice with it?

All good man. Still going between the Apple Intermediate and Pro Res as to what's giving better results. Stay tuned...

You better lock that baby up, cause I'm coming to steal it (and I'm bringing my new North Korean friends).

How in the heck does the camera deal with sound?

All's well in Seoul, Andy.

(Thanks for the video, I found a free, fast internet connection after 2 years and am trying to figure out where I was when the web went HD---HD, coming soon to a travelogue near you.)
