Giving and Feeling Thankful
Last year for the 10th anniversary of Malone and Co the crew gave Patty and I gift certificates from an organization called Kiva. Kiva is the world's first person to person micro loaning website. Kiva's goal is to eliminate world poverty by helping small entrepreneurs with loans from people like us. We receive email journal updates and track repayments for each person we lend money to. Then, when our loan is repaid, we can relend to someone else in need.
So if your looking to help out and not "bailout" Kiva would be a good choice.
Link to Patty and Mike's Kiva page.

Templeton Rye
A few weeks ago while shooting in Iowa the locals told us about a distillery that was brought back to life from the prohibition era. We headed over to Templeton, home of Templeton Rye Whiskey where Kevin gave us a private tour. There is some cool history about this whiskey including that this was Al Capone's favorite. If you're ever in the area you should stop by and then go pick up "The Good Stuff".

Hawkins Construction
There is always construction going on around town- so what better way for Hawkins to advertise than to put up signage on their job trailers. Andrew shot around the new south Omaha bridge project, new library in west Omaha and new high school in Elkhorn to create new images for outdoor advertising as well as website updates. Thanks to all the guys for being so accommodating. They look tough, but had a good time with the shoot.

It's the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness month and I'm finally getting some images from the Nebraska Susan G. Komen 2008 Race for the Cure posted. Sorry for the delay- slowly getting through the back log of photos. Congrats to all that helped make this year yet another record in attendance with over 17,000 participants! Very cool to see so many people supporting the good fight!

Saturday Night- Live From NYC
Another full day in NYC and we found alot more cool stuff that we would like to add to our arsanal. Our wish list is growing! We hit a couple good workshops that provided some new bits of info and reinforced that we are on the same page with alot of the industry leaders. Between new lighting and discovering cool new backend software - the best experience was getting our hands on the new Mark II 5d- look for some exciting new possibilities in the near future!
Huge shot out to Peter and Stephanie for letting us crash at their place! It worked out great-THANKS!

Old School Camera
So I'm going back to my roots and shooting some film. Yeah right, but I do love Polaroid. Too bad they're stopping film production soon. Check out Save Polaroid for some great info and links.
Andrew got me excited earlier this year with his Holgaroid. I bought one too and then while searching Ebay for film, I found a Polaroid Land Camera 350. It's Rangefinder that shoots pack film (full frame 3 1/4 x 4 1/4) that you can still find. There's even some 667 out there that's rated at ISO 3000. I can't wait to break this in on Saturday at the Wedding Event of the Year. There will be about 10 of us shooting and Andrew has made me the official media coordinator.

Mixing (mostly) Pleasure and (some) Business in Kauai
I've put together a fairly random gallery of images from our annual decompression trip the island of Kauai. This year we spent a few days shooting for Mad Gringo so our knowledge of the island was a big help in finding some nice locations. It's our ninth trip to Kauai and each year I seem to shoot more images. Enjoy! Click here to view the gallery.

Alabama & New Orleans
Earlier this week Anne and I spent a few days in the south. Our first stop was Fairhope, Alabama where I grabbed a few images from the local barber shop. We then headed over to New Orleans before coming home. I was pretty bummed out that A Gallery for Fine Photography was closed. This gallery in the French Quarter has one of the best photographic collections in the US including one of my favorite photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson. Of course we had to grab some beignets at Cafe du Monde. Check out the gallery of our journey.

What Aren't They Telling US
Andrew and Stephanie are driving around looking for parking in Santa Monica, CA- finally when we do find it we get a small sign saying that parking here is hazardous to our health. Luckily we parked on the roof- in open air. Watch out hypocondriacts. Hey, check out what we're doing out here, before this blog becomes hazardous.
We are shooting at 204 Studios- luckily it's been nice because our set is outside. We are soaking up some rays while working in the cool breeze of Hollywood. Beautiful and 75-80 degrees- with only mild smog. Best part of the heat is no humidity! Only a couple days left.

Kauai Fisherman
No, this photo wasn't taken in the 1800's. But with a little help in post it sure looks like it could have been shot in another era. While on our annual trip to Kauai I spotted a fisherman working from the rocks. The image you see is pretty close to what was dancing in my head as I fumbled to set up my tripod and camera. I was only able to get 10 or so frames before he climbed into his Toyota and was on his way.
Insider's note-this image is also posted to our photo log on Posterous. A nifty and super easy-to-use blogging site. We've challenged ourselves to put at least one image up every day.

Even when we are on holiday the camera in the hand gives us comfort. Andrew got to spend this 4th of July with friends in Okoboji and the view of the fireworks was ideal. Telephone Museum
A couple of weeks ago Alyssa and I did a shoot at the Woods Telephone Museum in Lincoln. This place has so much history about the telephone and many types of phones on display including the "brick" cell phone which sold for $6800 when it first came out-and some people think the iPhone is pricey! Someday I'm sure this will make it's place in the museum. Click on the image to see a few more images.

Morel season in Nebraska is a nice time for a walk in the forest. A walk which Mike spent most of the time taking pictures and not picking the morels. Click here to see some of Mike Malone's images. Lucky for Mike his partners in the quest were doing their job as you can see from the bountiful bag of oh so delicious morels. And no we can't tell you where the forest is located.

Perfect Storm
Angela and I were shooting at Dana College yesterday and had a rush session with some of the athletic teams. After a bit of scrambling to figure out what the look would be, we finally decided that portraits would be a better solution than action due to time. With the help of mother nature, the thunderstorm that was moving in offered a dramatic background for the soccer and football images we captured.

Can you just Photoshop® it?
Often I say "no worries we'll just fix that in post".
For this shot there we were very limited. The room was 6 feet wide with a huge desk, a lamp that we couldn't move, and about 15 minutes to shoot. Pretty blah! So Kate Heller our digital artist came to the rescue. Many of you know Kate's rock'n Photoshop® skills, so I thought I would share a series of emails that sum it all up.
Yeah. I think that would help. And anything you could do to the walls? Adding color? Darkening them? I just think it needs a little more help—we didn’t have much to work with as far as space and light.
-Heather" (Client)
"Sure thing. I can pull out the bag of tricks.
-Kate"
"I just thought there was some button in Photoshop® called “Kate’s Special Make Everything Look Kick-A@@ Filter”:0)

Great Wallpaper
Yesterday, Andrew Marinkovich spent the day at Adam and Emily's house (thanks for letting me take over with all the gear). Adam, a cool designer, offered up his sweet digs and awesome wallpaper. James, probably the biggest dog I've ever seen, was chauffeured to the set by Dave Nelson (Secret Penguin). Check out Dave's behind the scenes footage of James going crazy on set when he didn't get the right kraft services. All the models rocked it- shout outs to Zoe, Bailey, Spencer, Karli, and Claire for all the great work in front of the camera! Sneak peak.

We were on our way back from a shoot in Grand Island and stopped over in York, NE to enjoy fine dinning at Chances R. We all ate way too much- topped off with some deadly carrot cake.
Thanks to Greg for taking us to his old stomping grounds and sharing this jem! We won't be eating for a couple days. If you're a Blue Cheese dressing connoisseur this is a must stop.
